CarGo West under new ownership

When Brian Trevelyan and his silent business partner were approached about purchasing CarGo West, they quickly decided that it was an excellent idea. So, Trevelyan took over as Director and CEO of the freight company based in Grande Prairie, Alberta on April 1, 2011, setting his sights on repeating the feats that he had achieved with his past business endeavors.

"I was previously working in another company [where] I had a really cool opportunity to kind of get from start to finish," said Trevelyan. "I had an opportunity to make them grow. And then I wanted to see if I could do that with this [company] as well."

Trevelyan, who describes himself as "fairly young" and "fairly aggressive in nature" as a businessman, was attracted to CarGo West because of the company's solid client base, its personnel and the fact that they had their COR, ISNetworld and ComplyWorks certificates.

"I've always seen this company as a company that's got huge potential," he added. "And now I have the opportunity to be able to tap into that potential and grow it."

However, Trevelyan admitted that his new venture does have room for improvement, but that improving in those areas shouldn't be a difficult process.

"It's just a matter of being in the office and having vision in leadership," he said. "We're a lot more targeted towards our goals. I'm very goal orientated."

"We have one simple philosophy," Trevelyan continued. "We want to be the best at our business. It doesn't mean we want to take over the world. It doesn't mean that we want to make the most money. We deliver freight and we want to do the absolute best job we can for our company and for our clients. Because that's the service industry at its best. I had some priorities when I came into this office. I wanted to ensure that our fleet is in excellent condition, which it is. And we're working to be able to improve that. I want to ensure that our staffing is stable and strong, which it is. But I want to be able to strengthen that. I want to focus a lot on strengthening strategic relationships with our clients. That's really important. We have excellent clients. And I'm really excited [about] some of the people we get to do business with. But we always can do better at that. We can always take better care. And I really want to evaluate how we bring their freight to them and what times it comes in, and make sure that they are always and constantly happy with the service they receive."

As part of accomplishing that objective, Trevelyan has committed to visiting CarGo West's service locations in Edmonton, Calgary and Whitecourt, Alberta, and Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and Fort Nelson, British Columbia. Most recently, he spent some time Dawson Creek.

"Every city we do business with," said Trevelyan, "I want to spend as much time as possible, to make sure I shake as many hands as possible. That's really, really important to me. Those people are our lifeline. And it's important for them to know who I am, for them to be able to shake my hand, for them to be able to get a business card and know that they can call the number and they will get a response."

"It would be considered strategic meetings," he continued. "In my visits, I'm giving everyone an opportunity to let me know how we're doing. And I want to hear the feedback. That's really important to me. Because I want to do this business better everyday. That's probably the most important aspect of how I do business, is I want to make sure our people know that they can talk to me."

CarGo West also delivers to communities between those towns and cities where they have service locations, including Peace River, Alberta, and Tumbler Ridge, B.C.

"And there's possible expansion," said Trevelyan. "I'm actually going to a meeting right now, tomorrow morning, where we may be able to take freight all the way from Calgary straight through to Vancouver."

Trevelyan takes the service performance of his company very clearly.

"Our number one objective is to do the best job in delivering your freight. I've had the privilege of visiting a lot of excited and happy clients. And I want to continue that. That's really, really important to me."
